New gigs for October
1 Oct 2000

Sometimes it just happens this way ... I've been invited to play a couple more gigs, since I last posted to the Shows page, so October is turning into a fairly busy month. If you're in Chicago, you have three chances to see me; and if you're anywhere in central Wisconsin, make the trek over to Mt. Morris for an intimate "house concert" that will surely be a pleasure for everyone involved.

Not a curmudgeon
10 Sept 2000

I was wandering through a Circuit City store today when a young salesman took a guess at my demographic group and decided to try selling me an MP3 player. "The nice thing about this model," he said, "is that it doesn't support digital watermarking, so you can play any MP3 from the web -- even the ones you're supposed to pay for!" Great, I was thinking, a tool for ripping off musicians, that's just what I need.

Lots of people are excited about MP3s, and with good reason. But many of them are also getting confused about what these new technologies mean for musicians like myself. For a rather long rant about how I feel about MP3s, click here.

But I'm not just being a curmudgeon about this, really!

Still alive
10 Sept 2000

Okay, I've been lying low for a while, but I assure you that I'm still alive and well. I took a break after the Music of my Ancestors project to enjoy the latter part of the summer, and I've been working on a few personal projects that I'd gotten behind on.

I've also been helping launch a new, Chicago-based music organization called the Trunkstock Music Group. Trunkstock is shaping up to be something of an indie record label that facilitates touring, promotion, and CD sales for its members. You can visit our web site, which I helped build, and catch our first official gig next month. Music over moguls, baby!
