Flying
First performed 9/10/94

This morning I woke
From a dream not quite faded
And it surprised me to find
All my limbs firmly grounded
I'd been riding the air
Like a bright Chinese legend
But when I awoke
I felt hopelessly weighted

I could move through the air
As if I were swimming
But instead of water
It was air I was pushing
I flew high as I dared until safely forgotten
Then I went my own way
A wheeling white seabird skimming

Well cozy and warm in my bed is all right
And I'll never complain when you're holding me tight
But sometimes the morning light tells me I'd rather be flying
